Eritrean Representative to the UN wrote to Security Council….

28/11/09

Ethio – NEWS

Early this week, the Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations wrote to the President of the Security Council to denounce the draft resolution tabled in the Security Council last week. The resolution called for sanctions on Eritrea following its open support of extremist and terrorist opposition to the TFG in Somalia and its wider activities in the region of the Horn of Africa. This resolution was referred to experts for further analysis and has yet to come up for a vote.

Ambassador Araya’s letter took the expected line of suggesting that Eritrea’s interest and involvement in Somalia had been misunderstood. He claimed Eritrea did not favor or support a military solution in Somalia, did not support one party as opposed to another, nor work with one against others. Eritrea holds that any solution needs participation of all key Somali actors in an inclusive political process. The Ambassador also claimed that Eritrea has been attempting to organize such a process by engaging with various countries in the region to encourage an inclusive process. All this might sound persuasive but the Ambassador’s letter makes no mention of a number of undeniable facts:

1. Eritrea has consistently and publicly denied the legality of the TFG in Mogadishu, thus denying the inclusivity of a majority of Somali political figures, and calling for its overthrow;

2.It has repeatedly backed minority extremist elements, starting with the ICU in 2006, and among these have been Sheikh Hassan Dahir ‘Aweys’, who was provided with a base in Eritrea for over two years, and then in May 2009 was given sufficient quantities of arms to attempt the overthrow of the internationally recognized Somali Government in conjunction with the terrorist organization, Al-Shabaab;

3. It has consistently supported Hizbul Islam, the organization of Sheikh ‘Aweys’, and encouraged his connections with Al-Shabaab, and both, according to UN Monitoring Reports, have been the recipient of Eritrean arms;

4. Fighters from both Hizbul Islam and Al-Shabaab, who have been captured or who have defected in Mogadishu, have made no secret of the fact they have received training in Eritrea;

5. Members of the terrorist Ogaden National Liberation Front that has been operating in Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State have confirmed Eritrean support and training;

6. Last year, Eritrean troops crossed the border into Djibouti, and they remain there despite UN Resolutions and international calls for their withdrawal;

7. There are currently plausible allegations today that Eritrea has been supplying arms to rebels in Yemen, as it has been doing for several anti-government elements involved in armed struggle in Ethiopia, and for rebels in several other parts of the region.

Eritrea, in fact, far from assisting in trying to resolve the problems in Somalia has been encouraging the differences between political organizations there and actively supporting two of the most extreme factions, both identified as terrorist organizations. It has consistently, since its invasion of Ethiopia in 1998, worked for the destabilization of the Horn of Africa. It has never responded positively to any reasonable approaches as Ethiopia knows only too well with all its efforts to open dialogue and normalize relations since 2000 being aggressively rejected. Asmara and its President have consistently made it clear that prudence and negotiations are to be seen as a sign of weakness. Flexibility is seen as a sign of compliance with “the enemy”, and the enemy is apparently the rest of the world.

Nevertheless, however, as we noted last week, the Eritrean Government is prepared to abandon its normal intransigence and stubbornness on (rare) occasions, if only under duress and temporarily. It has been a regime following the logic of war since 1998, and even earlier; it is a regime driven by violence, and it only responds to overwhelming pressure as it did, albeit briefly in February 1999 and May 2000, when it acted in the same predictable manner. Demonstrating a complete inability to consider any reasonable course of action, it remained intransigent until the last minute and then succumbing under duress. Equally, it returned to its implacable immovability as soon as possible subsequently. It finds any departure from this, even with a gimmick such as the Ambassador’s letter, extremely difficult. Indeed, this is demonstrated by Ambassador Araya’s letter. Despite his supposed moderation, the Ambassador berates the Security Council for acts “contrary to the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations”, repeating a number of attacks the Eritrean Government has made against the Security Council in the last two or three years. He even insists on raising the issue of the Eritrean Ethiopia border, continuing to claim this is at the heart of what he calls the turbulent situation in the region, and suggests it lies behind the conflicts in the region. As Ethiopia has consistently pointed out, and indeed as Eritrea does not deny, it has been Eritrea which has been behind many of the problems of the region. To put down Eritrea’s invasion of Djibouti or its support for terrorism in Somalia to “frustration” with Ethiopia and the UN is carrying absurdity a step too far. To then claim, as senior Eritrean figures do, that this also explains the Eritrean Government’s refusal to implement its constitution, to allow elections or political parties, to close down its independent media, to hold an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 political prisoners, to refuse to allow demobilization of its hundreds of thousands of national service conscripts, is carrying the argument to the ludicrous.

Certainly, the Eritrean Government should now be able to read the writing on the wall. Faced by the real threat of international sanctions over its behavior, it is not surprising that it is opting for the appearance of moderation. However, on past record, this is not the moment to modify the pressure. As the Ambassador’s letter demonstrates, Eritrea has made no more than a slight change of language and has shown no indication of any real change of heart, nor indeed of policy. It has shown no indication of any change of policies over Somalia, over Djibouti, over its support for armed struggle in other states and regional destabilization. Indeed, if the reports from Yemen are true, it is actually intensifying its actions, whether at the behest of its paymasters or on its own account. That Eritrean officials speaking from Asmara and New York are not sincere can easily be seen by comparing notes of what EU/Eritrean interlocutors have been told in Asmara and what the Eritrean Ambassador in New York has informed the Security Council in writing. We are changing and entering a new phase, says a top Eritrean official in Asmara, adding tantalizing hints about how things might change in the future. He talked about the re-ordering of Eritrea’s priorities, even suggesting that the exclusive pre-occupation with boundary matters might for the moment be left in the background. Within a few days or less, the Ambassador in New York was saying the opposite, confirming that prudence and commonsense advise that Eritrean statements must be treated with considerable skepticism.

Even in Asmara itself, depending to whom one talks, one can get diametrically opposed renditions of what Eritrea may be up to. Interviews with the President over the last few days make it all too apparent that what the EU Ambassadors and other EU delegations have been told by other officials contain no truth. They are designed to confuse and are no more that thinly designed prevarication. Indeed, the President was yesterday quoted as threatening the international community which he said would regret moves to impose sanctions on Eritrea. Eritrea has consistently made it clear it only responds to overwhelming pressure, and this is what must be applied. Clear changes of policy and active implementation of acceptance of UN Security Council Resolutions should be the first indication of compliance. It is only this which will help bring back the region towards the rule of law and the goals of defeating poverty and keeping extremism at bay. (MoFA)

Eid Al-Adha colorfully celebrated nationwide…

Asmara, 27 November 2009

Eid Al-Adha was today celebrated across the nation in a colorful manner.
At a gathering held in Bahti Meskerem Square here in the capital, prayers headed by the Eritrean Mufti, Sheik Al-Amin Osman Al-Amin, were conducted in which tens of thousands of the faithful took part.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheik Al-Amin conveyed congratulations to the Eritrean people inside the country and abroad and stressed the need to extend a helping hand to needy compatriots and the offspring of martyrs. He further called on the Eritrean people to reinforce the cherished values of unity and harmony, and thereby back up the nation-building process. The Mufti further expressed conviction that the Eritrean people would as ever emerge victorious in meeting all challenges.

Present on the occasion were Ministers, Administrators and other Government and PFDJ officials.

Meanwhile, Eid Al-Adha was celebrated in Qatar through the collaboration of the Eritrean Ministry of Information, the Eritrean Embassy and the Eritrean Community in Qatar.

Speaking at the celebrations that was transmitted live via ERI-TV and Dimtsi Hafash, the Eritrean Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ali Ibrahim Ahmed, stated that the celebrations fully attest to the Eritrean nationals’ strong attachment with the Homeland.

The Chairman of the Eritrean Community in that country, Mr. Tahir Mohammed Arrei, on his part indicated that the long-standing joint celebration of religious holidays on the part of the Eritrean people is the source of their unity and identity. A cultural troupe from Asmara staged musical performance, thus adding color to the event.

What will sanctions mean to Eritreans?…

What will sanctions mean to Eritreans?…

What will sanctions mean to Eritreans? The consequences in human terms:

o Freezing Eritrea’s assets abroad will mean that our access to hard
currency will be curtailed and Eritrea will not be able to import essential goods that are necessary for our people and the nation’s survival;

o The impact of sanctions on the health of our country will be huge. Many
people who depend on medicine imports will be the first to suffer. The long term impact will mean that the health of our people will vastly deteriorate – our water quality will be affected (we will not be able to import water purification supplies) while shortage of spare parts for medical equipments such as X-rays and important lab machines will have monumental impact. Generally, Eritrea’s capacity to provide health care will be greatly diminished and all the gains that have been made in the fight against malaria, contagious diseases and other illnesses will be lost;

o Eritrea’s imports will be hurt badly. This will include medicines, all
kinds of food imports, much needed agricultural products such as fertilizers, pesticides, machinery spare parts, industrial spare parts, fuel, educational materials and etc;

o Food Security: All the efforts to ensure food security will be badly
affected. There will be even more shortages of basic food supplies while prices for basic foodstuffs will be even more expensive than they are now.
This will be coupled with low agricultural production which will make the situation even more dire;

o Eritrea’s economy will be so badly damaged because of lowered economic
activity, loss of trade partners, decline in export revenue, chronic unemployment and sharp decline in GDP and GNP per capita income;

o The country’s ability to defend itself and the interest of its people
from Ethiopia’s aggression will be severely curtailed. Any invasion could lead to a disaster in terms of displacement of citizens, loss of life and damage to infrastructure;

o A travel ban on government officials will result in a detrimental
diplomatic impact which will have short and long term consequences;

o The economic, social and political repercussions will set our country
years back and by the time sanctions had reached their final stage, everything that has been gained in Eritrea will have been completely lost;

o Ultimately, every single Eritrean will lose out – it will be our mothers
and fathers, young brothers and sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces, uncles and aunts – in short, every ordinary Eritrean will be the victim of the sanctions. Those who are trying to impose sanctions against Eritrea without any evidence at all are intent on plunging this young country into the Stone Age. If we allow this to happen, then we’ll all rue the day we couldn’t be bothered;

We, the Action Group for Eritrea, call upon all Eritreans and Friends of Eritrea to remain steadfast and oppose the draft resolution. We ask you to call for an end to the injustice and the co-ordinated attack against Eritrea by writing to your MP and other relevant bodies.

Sanctions on Eritrea will not solve the problem….

It has been reported that a draft resolution is being circulated among UN Security Council members calling for sanctions against Eritrea for allegedly supplying weapons to Somali insurgents fighting against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.
The draft resolution which was drafted by Uganda calls for an arms embargo, freezing of assets and travel ban for members of the Eritrean government. The draft resolution calls for member states to be authorized to inspect cargos to and from Eritrea if they suspect the cargo.

We wholeheartedly and unequivocally reject the idea of sanctions against Eritrea and view it as unjust and irresponsible for the following reasons:

The UN or any other country for that matter cannot be the accuser, the
judge and jury. To date, there has not been a single shred of evidence to link Eritrea with whatever/whichever party in Somalia by way of aiming to make the region unstable. The government of Eritrea has denied all charges levelled against it including weapons smuggling – thus far, the UN and AU have not been able to present any credible facts to prove otherwise.

The accusation against Eritrea was based on an unfounded and
unsubstantiated report produced by the U.N. Arms Monitoring Group. The Group accused Eritrea of shipping arms and claimed that 2,000 Eritrean soldiers were fighting alongside the Somali Islamic Court Union (ICU), which turned out to be pure fabrication. No Eritrean was found dead or alive in Somalia following Ethiopia’s invasion of the country. A plane that was allegedly transporting weapons and fighters from Eritrea was later found crashed in Uganda while being used by Dyncorp, a contractor for the US military and Intelligence service.

The UN Envoy for Somalia has admitted that despite the talks about
Eritrea supplying arms to Somalia, there is no hard evidence to link Eritrea with these accusations.

Therefore, the call for sanctions against Eritrea rests on flawed
premise – not only are the UN and AU intent on unfairly meting out punishment but their action represents a travesty of justice.

Sanctions on Eritrea will not solve the problem in Somalia and Eritrea
cannot be used as a scapegoat for the failure of others to bring about ‘peace’ in Somalia.

Sanctions never work: realistically speaking, all evidence points to the
inefficacy of sanctions. What’s more, when imposed against countries, sanctions have always produced a result that does not match the desired outcome. History is rife with examples of countries that have been left destitute as a result of sanctions.

What will sanctions mean to Eritreans? The consequences in human terms:

o Freezing Eritrea’s assets abroad will mean that our access to hard
currency will be curtailed and Eritrea will not be able to import essential goods that are necessary for our people and the nation’s survival;

o The impact of sanctions on the health of our country will be huge. Many
people who depend on medicine imports will be the first to suffer. The long term impact will mean that the health of our people will vastly deteriorate – our water quality will be affected (we will not be able to import water purification supplies) while shortage of spare parts for medical equipments such as X-rays and important lab machines will have monumental impact. Generally, Eritrea’s capacity to provide health care will be greatly diminished and all the gains that have been made in the fight against malaria, contagious diseases and other illnesses will be lost;

o Eritrea’s imports will be hurt badly. This will include medicines, all
kinds of food imports, much needed agricultural products such as fertilizers, pesticides, machinery spare parts, industrial spare parts, fuel, educational materials and etc;

o Food Security: All the efforts to ensure food security will be badly
affected. There will be even more shortages of basic food supplies while prices for basic foodstuffs will be even more expensive than they are now.
This will be coupled with low agricultural production which will make the situation even more dire;

o Eritrea’s economy will be so badly damaged because of lowered economic
activity, loss of trade partners, decline in export revenue, chronic unemployment and sharp decline in GDP and GNP per capita income;

o The country’s ability to defend itself and the interest of its people
from Ethiopia’s aggression will be severely curtailed. Any invasion could lead to a disaster in terms of displacement of citizens, loss of life and damage to infrastructure;

o A travel ban on government officials will result in a detrimental
diplomatic impact which will have short and long term consequences;

o The economic, social and political repercussions will set our country
years back and by the time sanctions had reached their final stage, everything that has been gained in Eritrea will have been completely lost;

o Ultimately, every single Eritrean will lose out – it will be our mothers
and fathers, young brothers and sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces, uncles and aunts – in short, every ordinary Eritrean will be the victim of the sanctions. Those who are trying to impose sanctions against Eritrea without any evidence at all are intent on plunging this young country into the Stone Age. If we allow this to happen, then we’ll all rue the day we couldn’t be bothered;

We, the Action Group for Eritrea, call upon all Eritreans and Friends of Eritrea to remain steadfast and oppose the draft resolution. We ask you to call for an end to the injustice and the co-ordinated attack against Eritrea by writing to your MP and other relevant bodies.

President Isaias’ Speech On The Occasion Of The 30th Anniversary…

22/11/09

Shabait.com – NEWS

Ladies and Gentlemen
Invited Guests and Participants

On this auspicious occasion marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Eritrean Workers Union, I would like to convey my warm congratulations to the Eritrean people in general and members of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) in particular.

The role played by Eritrean workers under various categories and in different forums, both before and in the course of the 30-year armed struggle for independence, along with the rest of the Eritrean people, occupies one of the significant chapters in the history traversed for a Free and Sovereign Eritrea. In this regard, the establishment of the Workers Union 30 years a go, i.e. 12 years before the achievement of total independence, aimed at placing and underscoring the role of Eritrean workers in its rightful historical perspective.

Nurturing freedom, achieving national development and progress, ensuring better standard of living and prosperity, indeed every aspect of life… and above all building a vibrant nation are essentially anchored on the value of work!

In the same manner, as the pledge and enduring motto of the workers union sought from the very beginning to nurture a workforce equipped with the requisite education, professional skill and experience, coupled with modern technological know-how, it is equally important at this juncture to see to it that workers’ productivity and output live up to the desired objective. Indeed, this is the hallmark of a potent workforce for building a vibrant nation. Equally important is the need to nurture a workers movement that possesses high economic, social and political awareness, as well as qualified, organized, conscious and dynamic labor-force fully committed to discharge national duties.

Hoping that this occasion would provide impetus to the task of realizing the aforementioned goals, I wish the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers and its action programs every success.

Glory to our Martyrs!
Victory to the Masses!

Draft sanctions to Eritrea experts not yet been discussed it…

AP – NEWS

A proposed U.N. resolution is calling for an arms embargo and other tough sanctions against Eritrea for supplying arms to opponents of the Somali government and refusing to resolve a border dispute with Djibouti.Uganda has circulated the draft to the 14 other members of the United Nations Security Council but diplomats said Friday no experts meeting has been scheduled to discuss it.Some council members are privately concerned that the proposed resolution, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, is too tough and might make it even more difficult to deal with the tiny Red Sea nation of Eritrea.

It would impose an arms embargo, call on U.N. member states to inspect all suspect cargo between Eritrea and Somalia, and impose a travel ban and asset freeze on Eritrea’s political and military leadership. It would also freeze the assets of government and private companies that violate the arms embargo.

The draft resolution also calls for financial and travel sanctions against any Eritrean individuals or entities that support Somalia’s armed opposition, obstruct implementation of a council resolution demanding that Eritrea pull its troops back from the Djibouti border, or support acts of violence or terrorist acts in the region.

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year guerrilla war. It has been feuding over its border with Ethiopia ever since, and uncertainty over its border with the tiny port nation of Djibouti led to hostilities between the two countries twice in the 1990s.

In June 2008, the Security Council condemned Eritrea for launching an attack against Djibouti, a key U.S. ally in the Horn of Africa, which the U.S. said left 44 Djiboutian soldiers dead and many more missing. The council called for a cease-fire and urged the two countries to withdraw their forces from the border, which overlooks key Red Sea shipping lanes. Djibouti did, but Eritrea has not.

The U.S. and Britain have also accused Eritrea of supplying weapons to opponents of Somalia’s Western-backed transitional government in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.

Last month, Britain called for sanctions against Eritrea for supplying arms to Somalia’s opponents. The African Union has also asked the Security Council to impose sanctions on Eritrea.

The draft resolution demands that Eritrea comply with the U.N. arms embargo on Somalia and withdraw its forces from the Djibouti border.

Somalia has not had an effective government since 1991 when warlords overthrew longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and then turned on each other, plunging the country into chaos and anarchy. The fragile U.N.-backed government and an undermanned, poorly resourced African Union peacekeeping force have struggled to defend government buildings, the port and airport in the capital, Mogadishu _ most recently rebuffing an offensive by Al-Shabab and the allied Islamic Party.

The Islamist militia group was designated a terrorist group by Washington in 2008 and has been trying to topple the transitional government.

The draft resolution demands that Eritrea stop all assistance to Al-Shabab and other militias trying to destabilize Somalia and incite “violence and civil strife in Djibouti, including the issuance of passports to non-Eritrean nationals.

Eritreans have been awarded for contributing in the community in uk…..

22/1109

24Dash.com

Arhag Housing Association has hosted a 30th anniversary event to celebrate its achievements and recognise the valuable contribution refugees and migrants have made to community life.

Arhag was founded in 1979 as a campaign group to challenge the housing disadvantages experienced by African migrants and refugees. It developed as a housing association in the 1980s and now manages over 700 homes in 12 London boroughs, making it the largest HA in the UK that specifically sets out to address the needs or refugee and migrant communities.

Arhag provides homes for people from all countries and continents but the majority of its tenants are African, a significant proportion of which are from the Horn of Africa.

The award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ was presented to Alem Gebrehiwot by the Mayor of Camden, Councillor Omar Faruque Ansari.

Alem has been an Arhag tenant since 1998 and is the Executive Director of a community project called Embrace UK.

Embrace UK was established in 1994 and seeks to further the integration of refugees and those of a refugee background by providing information, advice and guidance on a range of issues including education, training, welfare benefits, immigration, housing, money and debt, business start-up, employment, parenting and health.

The two runners up were Petros Tesfaghorghis and Habbib Azim.

Petros has been a tenant since 1996 and was recognised for his work with the Eritrean Elders Group, based in Kensington & Chelsea.

He was also recognized for his study into the experiences of failed Eritrean asylum seekers which he felt helped to influence accommodation and subsistence being made available to failed asylum seekers e.g. prior to appeal and pending going home.

Habbib has been a tenant since 1996 and was recognized for his role in setting up a disability support group amongst parents/carers in Newham in 2002. Many of the parents and carers are themselves refugees and migrants and his group has helped to remove some of the isolation they experienced.
