At least 133 illegal immigrants from Eritrea arrived by boat in southern Italy, according to reports Sunday.
Around 40 women and 15 children were among the group. Italian police stepped in to move the group to a provisional immigrant camp at the port of Portopalo immediately after they landed.
Authorities said a further 100 immigrants had travelled along with the 133 in the same wooden boat, making the group one of the largest from Africa to land in the area.
Investigators said the group may have set off on their perilous sea journey from Egypt.
